LPS Junior Robotics Competition

LPS Junior Robotics Competition

Lawton, OK – Lawton Public Schools will host its first ever Junior Robotics Competition on Wednesday, May 12. The competition will take place from 10 am to 1 pm at Central Mall in the Dillard’s Courtyard

Five local elementary schools (Carriage Hills, Freedom, Pat Henry, Ridgecrest and Whittier) will compete against each other. LPS technology trainer Doris Biegler shared that the competition is a way to let students show off the hard work they put into their robots.

“Students and adults love a good competition,” Biegler said. “Students need a way to show off the robots they built in a healthy environment with other students who have common interests.”

There are three areas within the competition: coding, driving skills, and creativity. Each of these areas will test the students on what they have learned and allow them to show off their overall STEM skills, programming skills, and the ability to work as a team.

“I am excited about being a small part of students getting real-life learning skills and having fun at the same time,” Biegler said. “I love knowing that robotics gives these students a reason to want to come to school and learn. It really helps build their self-esteem and confidence.”

The students have been meeting weekly at their respective sites to prepare for the competition. The event is open to the public and will be live streamed on the LPSTV YouTube Channel. Families are welcome to come and cheer on their student.
