Barrett J. Matthews has been hired as new head football coach at Eisenhower High School, pending Board of Education approval April 14.
Matthews met with the EHS and EMS teams on Thursday afternoon.
Matthews, a Texas native, has been offensive coordinator and head track coach at Legacy High School in Wichita Falls, Texas, since last year. Matthews is a 2012 graduate of the University of Texas where he played tight end, fullback and wide receiver. He played in three bowl games and on the 2009 Rose Bowl National Championship team with the Longhorns.
He earned a Bachelor of Education degree in December 2013 from the University of Texas, and was with the Houston Texans for a brief stint as a fullback in 2013 as a free agent. He has spent his entire coaching career in Texas; his first high school coaching job was at La Marque High School where he worked with the offensive line and tight ends.
He was freshman head coach and worked with the varsity offensive line and tight ends at Pasadena Frank Dobie High School from August 2017-18; was assistant coach for basketball, football and track at Seguin from August 2018-June 2019; was offensive coordinator/wide receiver coach at Odessa Permian from April 2019-June 2022; and was wide receiver/tight ends coach at DeSoto High School from Fall 2022-24.
Matthews will replace Javon Harris, who served as Ike head coach for the past three seasons.
